What will MDE look like in 2020?

Will MDE exist in 2020? If so, what will it look like? If not, what will have taken its place?

Here is your chance to comment on the future of MDE. Leave your thoughts by adding comments to this blog post and let us know what you think!

  1. I think there is a good chance that MDE will be like AI. Namely, that as good solutions get developed, they stop being thought of as MDE, and start becoming 'best practices'. Cf. Machine learning, computer vision, etc. I doubt it will be a wholesale shift to MDE, but rather piece-wise adoption.

  2. Agree with Neil.

Question : Is Agile programming in practice antithetical to MD? That has been my experience . Is this why there will be 'no wholesale shift'.

It depends on the type of MDE you are doing. If you use the Translationist aproach (see http://www.metamaxim.com/download/documents/MDAv1.pdf ) then the difference between modelling and programming disappears and you can do Agile MD very easily.

However, you need a modelling language that supports direct execution. Standard UML does not support this well (as discussed in: http://www.metamaxim.com/download/documents/re2008.pdf ) so tends to be antithetical to MD.
